Have you tried feeding him in the morning? I've had bettas in the past who would only eat in the few minutes after I turned the tank light on. The same goes for one of my lizards. I've never had one turn down frozen bloodworms or get an infection from them. The frozen foods carried at Petco/Petsmart seem to be reliable.
