Post History Lessons?

so, my brother has this report he has to do. he got to pick the topic, and he decided to do it on the history of the modern day betta fish. like, how they went from the wild bettas, to beautiful halfmoons, veiltails, Crowntails, ect. we tried searching google, but came up with not much. .___.

does anyone know of any sites that give 'history lessons' on bettas, that a high schooler can use for a report? i remember seeing some not too long ago, but i had to reformat my computer, and lost the site. ._.

:) I love the second link Mr.Vamp posted. If you go here on her website, it'll give you a lot of info on the general history

the halmoon, section of bettysplendens.com has an article describing the history of how the tail type in great detail.

I hope your brother's project goes well. It'll certainly be interesting, and something I doubt many judges have seen before.

There are history articles available through the TA library on the sales page of the ibc.

I'll throw a little history at you from what I can remember.

Basically for fun field workers would grab out two little fish from a rice paddy and see which one would sumbit first. Eventually this became a serious sport and people were selectively breeding the fish for sport. Eventually people began to breed them ornamentally, finding through trial and error that certain colors could be obtained and longer fins through selective breeding.

In the 50s and 60s the veil tail betta was considered the highest quality and quickly rose in popularity when they made it to the US. Some say that these little fish are part of the reason the aquarium hobby is as big as it is nowadays. In the 70s the IBC was born and it began to establish standards for the tail types. I believe t hat by this time roundtails were the thing.

A breeder discovered the halfmoon trait by accident. At first it wasn't widely received and then gained popularity and became the "ideal" of a betta.

Crowntails and halfmoon plakats came much later, in the 80s or 90s I believe. I'm not sure where abouts the DT came along.
