Not sure what is wrong with him

When I first got Gaeta, he had horizontal stripes on his side and I did not notice them until after I bought him from the 'good' local pet store. The stripes went away and his colors started to come out after a couple of days of having him. Today, I noticed that he was starting to hang out at the bottom of the tank a lot and was constantly resting on his homemade leaf hammock (and trying to rest in the bottle part of the baffle filter). I just performed his weekly 100% water change and those horizontal stripes came back. He seems to be lethargic right now and I am not sure why. I do not have any pictures to show because my camera is dead. But any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Housing
What size is your tank? 5 gallons
What temperature is your tank? 80 degrees
Does your tank have a filter? yes
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration? no
Is your tank heated? yes
What tank mates does your betta fish live with? 1 mystery snail

Food
What type of food do you feed your betta fish? Aqua culture betta pellets
How often do you feed your betta fish? 2 pellets in the am and pm

Maintenance

How often do you perform a water change? 2x a week
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change? 1 50% and 1 100%
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change? conditioner and chlorine remover
Water Parameters:
Have you tested your water? If so, what are the following parameters?

Ammonia:n/a
Nitrite: n/a
Nitrate: n/a
pH: n/a
Hardness: n/a
Alkalinity: n/a

Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed? The horizontal stripes came back.
How has your betta fish's behavior changed? He is floating around at the bottom and his leaf hammock a lot more than he used to. He used to be very energetic and isn't anymore:(
When did you start noticing the symptoms? Started noticing them yesterday, and he hasn't changed since then.
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how? I have not started treating him because I do not know what is wrong with him.
Does your fish have any history of being ill? Not that I know of, but I have only had him for maybe a week.
How old is your fish (approximately)? I am not sure, I would guesstimate that he is younger than a year old.

It could just be that your fish is stressed from the water change. Sometimes my betta, Leroy, loses a bit of his body colour and gets "stress stripes" when I do a large water change. But, after a while he'll regain his colour.

How long have you had your betta? If you just got him fairly recently, he could just be taking a little while to get settled in and used to the water changes, etc.

Let's see what the others on the forum have to say, too.

Since you just got him about week ago, he is still stressed out from the change. Also your tank is not cycled, so you may want to read this sticky
http://www.bettafish.com/showthread.php?t=47838
Once your aquarium is cycled you can do 50% once a week. It will be easier for your and less stressful for your betta.
Oh and in the meantime, when you're doing water changes, please make sure that temperature of added water is close to the temp. that he is in.

Pellets are good food for your betta. Something to consider as well is to feed him six day a week and fast him one. It helps them to have a fasting day to aid with digestion. :)

Thank you guys for the advice! He seems to be doing a little better today, and it seems that he is trying to jump, so I hope that is a good sign. I do make sure that the water is the same temperature every time I change the water. I always let his container sit in the water for roughly 30 minutes to an hour checking both water temperatures with a thermometer. I am going to get the water drop testing kit for the tank as soon as I have extra money to spare. I have only spotted one in this town the other day at the "pet" store in the mall. But I will start fasting him every seven days:) I just want a happy, health, Gaeta:)
