Eating or Lack thereof.

Hey everyone, I'm at a bit of a loss at the moment.

I rescued three boys from someone who didn't want them and were going to destroy them, over a week ago. They seem to be doing well in every aspect, well at least two of them are. Those two, well they're happy, really active, and eating well. I plan to move them into bigger digs this weekend since they don't have any sort of illnesses.

The third boy is active, blowing bubble nests and all, but he's not eating. I do have the food they were feeding him, which is Wardly Betta pellets, but he's not eating that, and I prefer Hikari Biogold, but he refuses that too. I've been looking for the internal parasites poop, but so far it hasn't shown face and I have been watching him like a hawk. Aside from not eating, he's healthy as the rest of my spoiled fish.

I'm in the process of trying the garlic juice trick I've read about, but with how stubborn this fish is, I'm not sure if that will work. If it does not, what's the next step?

Am I changing his water too much and stressing him out? Or am I not doing it enough. I've been doing a 50% one day, then a 100% the next (see sticky). I've been toying with doing a 100% every day because some of the food is sinking. He won't even go up and investigate it unless I walk out the room. I've started doing one pellet at a time, but no such luck.

And here's the sticky as it might help.

Housing
What size is your tank? 1 Gal Quarantine Tank for now
What temperature is your tank? 76 degrees
Does your tank have a filter? No
Does your tank have an air stone or other type of aeration? No
Is your tank heated? Yes, though it only ever turns itself on at night.
What tank mates does your betta fish live with? None

Food
What type of food do you feed your betta fish? I feed Hikari Biogold
How often do you feed your betta fish? Twice Daily- 2 pellets

Maintenance
How often do you perform a water change? Daily
What percentage of the water do you change when you perform a water change? 50% one day, followed by a 100% change the next.
What type of additives do you add to the water when you perform a water change? Seachem's Prime. (My water ages first)

Water Parameters:
Have you tested your water? If so, what are the following parameters? NA

Ammonia:
Nitrite:
Nitrate:
pH:
Hardness:
Alkalinity:

Symptoms and Treatment
How has your betta fish's appearance changed? Still the same as a week ago. No fin damage, no ick, and no sign of any parasites. He's not bloated or anything either.
How has your betta fish's behavior changed? Hasn't changed.
When did you start noticing the symptoms? Been watching him for about a week, assumed it was stress from him moving, and that he was resisting the new food. I have had bettas do it in the past. After a week though, they usually start eating.
Have you started treating your fish? If so, how? Not sure what to do yet. I've been trying to just put one pellet in and see if he'll take it.
Does your fish have any history of being ill? Not that I am aware of.
How old is your fish (approximately)? I'm guessing a year to a year and a half, cause I was there when the person got him, and he was tiny.

Thanks for any and all help guys.

Welcome to the forum.....

Has he ever eaten for you......

Have you tried any live foods like mosquito larva

Since he is overall acting okay and looks okay...he may need more time to adjust....try the fresh garlic juice laced food, live food or even frozen food...keep up with the water changes....I would maybe decrease them a bit to 1-50% and 1-100% in the 1gal unfiltered QT tank...that should maintain water quality for one Betta....

Keep us posted and would love to see some pics.....

I've never actually seen him eat so I'm going to say No, he hasn't eaten for me yet. He'll show interest, but doesn't take a bite.

I haven't tried live foods yet and that's a thing I'd have to take up with my family as I'm not sure how they'd feel about that, it might freak my mom out, if I was still in my apartment I'd do it in a heartbeat. I'm willing to try frozen if the garlic juice doesn't work for him, though that might freak mom out too.

I'll do that with the water changes then and just keep an eye on him. He's in my bedroom so it's quiet. I could put him in my closet for a few days if you think a nice dark quiet place would be good for him. I usually leave one of my closet doors open so there would be some light.

Pictures will come eventually, I've got a few memory cards worth of just pictures of my fish that I have to go through. I'll pick the best ones and show off all six of my boys.

Thanks so kindly for the quick response.

I absolutely love your avatar pic. It is just adorable!

I hope that your fishy gets better and starts eating! And that was great for you to rescue the 3 guys.

Thank you very much, I couldn't resist that face myself.

I do too. I'm hoping it's just a small glitch and he's just being stubborn with the food. I couldn't say no to them, particularly when I had the tanks and was planning on buying at least one more betta anyway.

Thanks for the well wishes and the welcome. I'll keep everyone updated.
