How long to keep them together?

Since this is only my second spawn, I'm still wet behind the ears and nervous ....

I put a pair together yesterday morning around 7ish. Around 10 this morning I released the female - she showed all the right signs - barred, full of eggs, showing ovipositor. However the male has thus far built a few very wimpy nests, maybe about the size of a quarter, and only one bubble thick (the largest, the others are tiny). He's not chasing her anymore either.

I was thinking if nothing happens (barring any major fighting) by Saturday i will pull her and try with another female?

My bettas did that when i was breeding them, can some of the water helped with me and the Male and he built bigger bubble nest. When My stopped chasing the female she would come around and they would "dance" Just give some time

Give them time. Mine sometimes spawns after 4-7 days (specially first timers). As long as the female is not getting beaten up too badly, she will be fine.

Don't worry about the nest. Some males are too lazy to bother with nests.

as of last night (bout to go check) he hasn't touched her ... no nips or tears at all, she is showing stress lines though

If the female is showing stress lines, I'd take her out and recondition. IMO, though she may eventually spawn, but when? You can leave the male but some people prefer to take the male out as well.... up to you.

On your next attempt, make sure both are flirt swimming before you release.

I agree with indjo.. If she's stressed that means she's not ready to breedm
