I taught my dog sign language - at the time of his death he knew over 30 commands in sign language and spoken English, and about 5 in Spanish. It was relatively easy since we taught him spoken commands first.

However, I can see how teaching a deaf dog could be rather easy. You could sign "sit" and push down on his rump so he sits, and then reward him.

My first dog died when I was seven, and he was blind and deaf. It was pretty cool.

From my experience and what I've been told, most dogs learn the body language/hand signs first. Getting a dog to sit is really easy, just hold the treat above their head and walk towards them, they'll walk backwards and eventually sit, then reward with a treat. :D It was always more difficult to get a dog to sit by just saying sit, the hand sign was always what triggered them first. I remember many training sessions getting them to learn the words without the signs, but they learned the signs immediately. But, that's just my experience. :D

He's a gorgeous dog! Good luck with him! (PS I like Cooper)

Yeah, hand signals work better anyway. If you're in an area where a dog can't hear you very well, it's better for them to know by gesture. My Molly knows hand gestures. My husband bugs me to use words but I do what I want. :P And they mostly rely on body language anyway. Good luck! He's very cute. I like Cooper too.

Lol. i come off a farm if your dog cant hear you over bawling cattle and howling wind he looks to you for a sign. i point strait down about my eye level and gus sits, i point closer to the floor and he will lay, in play i flick my hand back to get him to move back, hold a single finger up for stop/stay.
when walking i have my left hand down loose if i need him to stop i say wait or hold out hand palm to him is stop signal

Stormy already knows sit and lay so were kinda half way there haha and i dunno the names starting to warm to me, but ill know when i see him

twister is a funy name too

so im down to:
Stormy Cooper Dusty Axel or Twister hahah
