It all started with a 3 year old...

Hi everyone! I've been creeping here for the past couple of weeks and finally decided to join. I just bought my first betta ever a few weeks ago! I have never had fish before except for a county fair goldfish that amazingly lived for a year back when I was in 4th grade :)

My godson and I were at PetsMart and he became instantly enamored with the fish so I decided that he should have one! His parents are going through a nasty divorce and is having trouble sleeping so I figured that having a fish in the room would help him go asleep. $40 later we're walking out with a tank, food, and a little blue and red male Betta that he named, "Orangefish" (go figure, lol). I told the hubby that I figured the fish wouldn't live very long so we wouldn't make a huge investment. But, thanks to all of you and your wonderful information I decided to take it more seriously and pimp out the little guy's condo! I have a feeling he's going to be moving into my classroom here this September... I'll get pictures up soon!

It's awesome you got him a betta and the right habitat, they are wonderful pets that are relatively long lived when well cared~ I can't wait for pictures of Orangefish.

Awe, how sweet.
I look forward to pictures...My 3 year old nephew is who started the whole betta addiction for me.....He was living somewhere new and was scared in his room..So I got him a little fish...Now I have 8...

Welcome to the forum :D Bettas can live for 2-3 years, sometimes even longer with perfect care :) Did you get a heater and a thermometer for your tank? Bettas need a temperature of 77-82F. :) What size is your tank?

OF is in a 1-gallon tank (Aqueon Mini Bow 1) currently, he will be moving into a larger tank once we get settled with our home renovation and we can get a better spot for him (he was very much a spontaneous purchase). He does have a thermometer on his tank and I watch it pretty well. Thankfully we are in FL so our house rarely goes below 76, ha!

He's beautiful! I love his coloring!

Also: I LOVE his tank! It's so cool looking! He must have a lot of fun exploring it. The only change I'd suggest is getting another silk plant.

haha great fish!!!!!!!!! Mine is in my avatar, his name is Josh. Hes in a heated filtered 10g all by himself. I would recommend at least a 5g tank for OF, that way you can cycle it, to reduce water changes. Good Luck!
