Question Spitting food out?

All three of my bettas will spit their food out a few times before swallowing it. They do this about 70% of the time I feed them. I'm feeding Tetra flakes in the morning and tetra pellets at night. Is this normal?

My betta was doing the same thing and I switched food up and the problem went away. I can't decide if the pellets I was giving her were to big or she was bored of them. I switched to feeding her the following diet and have had no problems with eating since:

Bloodworm: 2 every other Sunday

Fast day: Tuesdays

Nutra Fin Max: 2-3 pellets 2x a day

She also ate the Aqueon Betta Food right away but it didn't have as much protein and the 2nd ingredient is whole wheat flour.
