Anyone have a pet dumbo rat, or a pet rat here?
I love them!!!
They are SO cute and awesome.
I almost convinced my family to let me get one, but my mom strongly dislikes rats!
And cause of allergies...>.<
But I can say that she DID say they were cute!!!

lol. i know i want a pet hamster or rat but NOOOOO not even if i pay for it, keep it in my room, clean it 24/7 and buy its food!

I had a hamster once, for almost 3 years, they are awesome pets, but careful, they are ninja prison breakers~

My daughters and I have kept a number of Dumbo Rats over the years. They are mellow, smart and cute companions.

The problem is they are prone to infestations and respitory issues that do not always cure, and cancerous tumors. They do not live long. Their average lifespan is 3 years.

My oldest daughter is 25 and currently has two males at the end of their lifespan. She even had the males' fixed', to extend their lifespan... but unfortunately, it had no effect on their lifespan.

Rats are the smartest of the rodents, and wonderful pets... but their short life span and health issues do not make them ideal pets. Also, call your local animal hospital and ask them how much money it costs to humanly 'put down' a rat that is suffering from, say, an inoperable tumor. You'll be unpleasently surprised how much it cost to humanely end their suffering.

BTW, rats are not good pets for people with allergies. I have allergies andbecame very allergic to rats. I no longer keep them.

Hamsters are cute too!!

Yea, I think it would be hard to let go a pet if they don't live long, and you get attached to them.

My niece has a dumbo rat named Fudge. We ended up taking care of it for a while here at our house. I must agree with you he was very smart and friendly. He would sit on my shoulder and burrow into my hair next to my neck and lick me lol. He is now back with her, and has taught the other regular rat she has how to lick people. I liked how he would customize his tissue box "house" with windows and a sunroof, all the while ignoring the neat wooden one we bought him LOL.

Overall I never thought I would like rats until I took care of hers. :)

I used to have a little brown-and-white rat named Pyro. He rode everywhere on my shoulder. He lived almost four years, but was plagued by the usual mycoplasma (upper respiratory infections). They are expensive and high-maintenence pets, but we enjoyed our boys immensely!
