Red and black marks on face?

Hi, I have had my betta, Peewee for a week and he has red and black marks on the sides of his face near his gills. These marks have been here since the start but they've been getting more noticable every day. I did some research and thought it sounded something like ammonia burns but my LFS said ammonia takes longer to build up and it's probably just not enough use of water conditioner. He also has a bit of a big stomach wich I'm assuming is just overfeeding. Peewee lives in a 2.5 gallon, filtered tank. I've been changing his water daily to try and help him heal. Here is a picture I have of him:

Aw hes adorable, what a cute name also. Are you sure it couldnt be a natural marking starting to show through since hes less stressed? One of mine hed that marking there on both sides. But hopefully you get some more responses soon also *bump*

I'm not sure if it's natural or not, but he's been changing colours since I got him. He started of white with a see-through body and yellow eyes, but now his fins and the top of his head are turning yellow and his eyes are going blue. Thankyou for replying :)

It looks like natural coloring to me... Maybe he has the "marble" gene.

It's natural. I've had fish with that before. Nothing to worry about.

Good to know
Mine was from craigslist
The picture posted showed mine all white.
When I got him 2 weeks later he was opalescent
Now he's opalescent/cream with black/grey around the openings and beginings of his tail
I did not know they change that much
Wow!
