I went into my Petsmart to look. Just to look. I told myself I wasn't going to get anything, not even cat treats for my kitties. And I walked out with another 2.5g tank and a scraggly looking girl. Sigh. This is why I stay out of casinos and bars.
Soooo, I have a new girl. Judging from her cup, she'd been there for some time 'cause the water was nasty and it looked like the lid hadn't been dusted for a while. Her fins are pretty ragged right now but other than that she seems lively because she just tried to jump. I can't tell you what color she is because I have no idea. Right now she's kind of clearish with serious horizontal stress stripes She looks like a zebra danio. I'm hoping she'll turn out to be blue or green since I already have two red bettas. Well, sorta red. Goldikova's kind of red-gold-brown. I'll try and post a picture or two when she settles down and stops hiding behind her plants.
So . . . take my advice. Don't go into pet stores just to look. It doesn't work.
Yeah, I'm learning that lesson. Sigh, it was never an issue until I got into fish. Sure I'd look at the hamsters and mice and think, "Oh cute!" but I somehow managed not to get any. But these bettas, knowing they have to live and breathe in those stupid cups . . . I'm a sucker, that's what I am.
I think it is 1tbsp for 5 gallons, maybe more but I know this much is normal :)
I go just to look too and end up with 5 bettas, a turtle, 4 mice and a kazillion mollies! It all started with the mice :X...I think someone should start therapy programs for people like us: Help for the Multiple Pet Acquisition Disorder Affected and Betta Lovers Anonymous

Yup, sign me up, I think I need the extra extensive therapy program And my local Petco has a special room for a cat rescue society so I cruise by there all the time also . . . little more self control there because I already have 8 cats. But it sure does get hard to resist. One thing I'll never bring home: snakes or lizards.
Actually, fightergirl, I'm hoping my new girl turns out to look like the one in your avatar. Her fins seem like they may be reddish but her body is dark so I'm hoping it'll be blue or green. She still looks like a danio right now, though.
TwilightNite, I almost did. I actually put back the second girl while they were ringing me up. She was in a much better condition and I thought, "Okay, she's pretty so she has a good chance of being adopted but this ragged girl here needs a home now."
But the bad news is I have to go back to that Petsmart to get some sand . . .
I went to both petco and petsmart today and the selection was terrible. Uusally petco takes good care of the bettas, but they haven't been apparantly. They also had a bad selection, they used to have amazing stock.
There is a crowntail boy I am tempted to go back and see if they will give him to me, he was floating on his side and badly bloated, but no pineconing.
If I go back, what should I say to try to talk the manager into rescue?
*sigh* Try working in a pet store. I've been back to work for two months and have 4 bettas. What makes it even worse is that when fish orders come in I'm the one who deals with the bettas *facepalm*
