male and female bettas

we've had our male betta for just under a year now, recently we bought a female betta, my question is: can they live together in the same tank without killing each other or should we keep them separate?

You should keep them seperate. If the male decides to mate and the female is not ready, there's a chance he will kill her. It's possible though if the tank is sufficiently large enough, she might be able to escape without too much worry.
