Hi, I'm new here!

Hi everyone,
I'm a college student, and I am planning on getting a betta roommate at the start of the school year. (I have two goldfish, but their 40 gallon tank can't make the trip with me). I have a 2.5 gallon tank for my new friend, but I'm not going to buy him until I'm already settled in, to spare him the stressful trip. I'd love a white or black veiltail, but I doubt Petsmart will have anything so fancy. The most important thing is that he's healthy.
I'm not really familiar with the filter protocol for bettas. I was thinking of stuffing some cycled media into a floss cartridge and sticking an air tube into that. Should that work? What kind of water changes would that setup require?
The other thing is a heater. Heaters make me really nervous. I keep hearing about fish getting fried when they explode or whatever. Do you guys have a good, safe brand you can recommend?
I'm really excited to be here, and I can't wait to meet all of you!

Marina or Marineland have great ten watt heaters for 2.5 gallons and up. I have Marineland (you'll need a thermomitor. It can go up to the eighties in heat. It's a pre-set.) Trust me I didn't know the higher watt versions were on recall when I bought it. I have had zero problems and it keeps my fish in comfy 81 degree water.

BTW if you go on Aquabid...Breathe deeply.

College kids unite! >:D

Dont worry about the exploding heaters... Its a fluke thing, and the heaters that needed to be recalled were a select make and size- upwards of 25-50w, which is too much... Try getting the marineland 10w ($20)... I use them in my tanks and love them to bits.

Good luck, and pics pics pics when you get the fish!
