I'd have more fish if I had more time, more money and less responsibilities.

He's not a spade tail- but he is a very good looking VT.

VT's can and do look like that. Spade tails are VERY spaded. You would truly know if you saw one, its much more...er...spade-y.

Thanks, I'll stick with that then. I pretty much Google imaged Betta fish and picked the one that looked like Cheesy the most. That's where I got my initial VT guess.

I was looking at aquabid, on what qualities are the fish rated? It's all so fascinating to me, a whole new world really!

Indeed! It's funny though, I read a lot of people on here posting "I'd have more time, more money, and less responsibility if I didn't have so many fish!" lol!

That's a hilarious spin on that!!!

I love critters of all kinds.
Spending time/money on live stuff is way more fun to me than buying stuff I need...lol

Look for a fish with clear eyes (no clouding), good finnage (dont get feather tails or rose tails, theyre pretty but sickly) and look for a good seller. There are many US sellers, which ship cheaper than Thai sellers with just as good of fish.

Examples of rose/feather tails:

Poor suckers tend to not be as healthy.

Also, dont fall for a lot of the crap that AB sellers try and pull off... You might notice it from time to time-- SPECIAL DIAMOND EYE BETTA! is actually a poor blind betta, but theyre trying to get you interested... Get my drift?
lol!

Halfmoons and halfmoon plakats tend to be the most popular fish. Halfmoons do tend to have tail problems, though- since they have huge tails.

HM plakats dont suffer the same problem, but like with any short finned fish, they should be given at least 2 gallons of heated tank.

I picked up my first Betta boy a week and a half ago, impulse buy at pet store (although I did research on them, just didn't plan for one so quick!) and not 3 days later someone posted that horrid aquabid thread. I don't remember who it was, but ohhh buddy. I picked up my second Betta, an Aquabid boy the other day at the bus terminal. Since then, I have picked out a breeder Betta close to me, a female to breed with my Aquabid boy (maybe) and a found a gorgeous Opaque (white) boy from a local forum member.

I warn you, buy tanks now. Even if you don't need them, you will eventually LOL

Congrats and welcome to the forums, you'll fit in perfectly! Your boy looks like my Venom :)
