So my betta Good Sir-- he's just gotten over ich-- or so I thought. He was spot-free for four days. Today I took a peek at him-- only to find he's got a few sports. But I'm more worried about his FACE.
Where the face meets the mouth, the.... limp of skin over the mouth seem swollen, and it's pulled back from his face. It's not a pretty sight at all, and I'm worried.
He's in a heated filter 5 gallon
Tank is at 80 degrees.
100% water changes once a week.
NLS betta formula, 4 pellets once a day
Prime water conditioner
Is always under the weather looking-- was very listless in a petco cup when I bought him.
I wonder if it's an abscess or maybe a tumor. My sister recently got one with a tumor that has grown larger within the week we've had him. It's right next to his eye. All I can recommend is maybe up the water changes to make sure it isn't an infection. Hopefully someone with more know-how will post something.
One of my girls actually has a lump in the same spot. She had just recovered from external parasites (not ick though). It started off as slime coat sloughing and then turned into a lump. I treated with Erythromycin, no good. Aquarium Salt didn't work either. I believe it is either an abscess or a tumor. It could be a abscess in the nasal cavity... At the moment, I'm treating with Aquarium Salt, but I'm not sure really. Maybe Epsom Salt would work better... Since you are using salt for the ick you could try Jungle's Anti-Bacterial pellets. Those won't interfere and they will help fight internal bacterial infections (abscess=bacterial infection). If she was a land animal I'd do a hot compress and put some pressure on it but that won't work for fish!
As for the ick, it isn't uncommon for them to be clear for a few days then have a sudden resurgence. Just continue the treatment and make sure you preform 100% daily water changes to remove fallen parasites before they can reproduce.
Last night he was swimming around. The space between his face and mouth had taken a whiteish apperence, but he was eating heartly and had perked up.
This morning, maybe 14 hours later, I found him not moving at the bottom of the tank. There was a whiteish fluff around his main body, his water stunk of dead fish, and he was quite pale, with dark bruising on his belly. He must have passed earlier in the night.
