heater?

Sorry for asking stupid questions but I am new to betta fish. I have Mugzy at home and Prince at my job. I have been reading posts about heaters. I do not have a heater for either one. Is it good to have a heater or can I leave their tanks without? Thanks!

Bettas are tropical fish which require warmer waters...77-80 degrees.Depending on where you live you may or may not need a heater. Usually if you are running an A/c though you will need one. I would start off by getting a thermometer to determine what temperature your tank is without a heater. What size tank are they in? Maybe I can recommend some nice heaters.

You can get thermometers from the fish section in walmart for about 1 dollar, and they're very accurate. :)

The size of the tank will determine what sort of heater and wattage you need, but heating smaller (less than 2 gallons) tanks will be difficult to heat and will probably require an upgrade.

Prince is in a 2 gallon and Mugzy is in a small bowl at the moment. I just set up his new 2 gallon. I will be moving him in it tomorrow. I wanted it to run with the filter and let the water adjust to the temperature.

So I went out and bought a thermometer and the water is ranging between 72-76. Any suggestions?

I have a heater, but I dont use it anymore. Instead, I leave the light on during the day and turn it off at night. It keeps the temp in my 10 gal between 75 and 79 at all times.

I use these, very handy and cheap.

Just out of curiosity wouldnt the tank cool down significantly at night?
