By the way what is a powerhead? I'm not even a rookie when it comes to filters

Bettas need a gap to breathe, they have a labrynth organ which makes it so they have to breathe from the surface....If you don't allow that they will drown....yes that's right the fish will drown. Wierd but true.

The powerhead is the pump thing which is feeding the water into the filtration system which I am guessing is built into the hood of the tank, having seen the same model at various shops.

And don't worry about water levels as long as there is some sort of ventilation coming into the hood of the tank.
