Measuring a betta?

Ok here's the weird question of the day, lol. I've seen on Aquabid and other sites, people putting a fish in a plastic bag with only a few drips of water to measure them. Seems kind of stressful/dangerous/cruel to me, so I wonder if that's a standard method?

The reason I ask is because I'm babysitting three boys I got for my niece and nephews until they can bring them home, and the turquoise plakat I got for my oldest nephew (dubbed Dratini by the Pokemon-loving kids) is HUGE. They're all young, since I only got them about two weeks ago from Petco, so I'm wondering if I have a Giant on my hands. In which case, I'm going to have to find a bigger tank for that guy. O_O;
