How many water changes?

I divided my 6gal tank but the filter is on one side and the water isn't really getting to the other side very well now. I can tell because when I look at the surface of the water at an angle, it comes out of the filter and swirls around the top of the water on the one side, and the water surface on the other side is COMPLETELY still. No movement at all. I don't have a fish on the other side yet (I had a new guy, but he died while in QT ). I also have a moss ball, banana lily, and quite a few crypts, so lots of live plants in there. I *was* doing one 50% water change per week, which is probably more than necessary considering having a filter and live plants (and only one fish), but I figured better safe than sorry. If I take out the filter, do you think this amount would still be enough? Or should I go more? Not really sure what to do... this is my first betta tank, I'm used to my 20gal with tropical fish which was a little different!
