My Mom is from Roanoke, Virginia; well actually Salem, VA but Roanoke is like 10 minutes from there. It's actually one of the places I'm considering moving to when I move back to Virginia.

As for Cities... New York is a must if you've never been, Washington, D.C. is another great city, full of museums, etc.

San Antonio, TX is beautiful and has great food. Miami, Fl is wonderful and if you come in the winter it won't be unbearably hot. Atlanta, GA is nice, it has the Georgia Aquarium which is fun to go see. It also has a nice art museum, the Coke Museum, Centennial Park where the olympics were held.

St. Augustine, Florida is another gorgeous little city.

Or.. you can come to Savannah... we have gorgeous parks and shops..... and ghosts

For NYC, Central Park is free. You can bring a lunch and have a picnic. Walking through Times Square is free too. Those are two really memorable things to do. Cabs, sadly, are not free. :P

Never believe TV.

About 30 minutes from where I live is a highway where alot of them set up food stands in the summer, with fresh veggies and fruits, and baked goods. Years ago I bought some fresh bread from one of their stands. I will never look at bread again in quite the same way.

They know what they are doing with food in a big way.

Amish are really good with horses too. A lot of trotters (harness racehorses) who are injured or retired are sold or given to the Amish for their wagons and carriages.

I second that. You can still get in some skiing at that time of the year, too.
