For me, the reason I would prefer a 15 over a 20 high is aesthetic. I already have more 20 highs than I need, and they lead nowhere but to bigger tanks. A 15 is, to my mind, sufficient unto itself. It doesn't seem to encourage putting too many or too large fish in there, leading to a forced upgrade.

That said, with a 20 high, if you put a male betta in there last (or removed him to a bowl for 3 or 4 hours when adding new fish) you should be able to stock with distinct lower and middle layers in addition to the betta, and have those critters not get in the way.

Well I went and bought the 14 because it had everything with it and I like the hood and everything, however it just looks too tall when I got it home. It is the same footprint as the 10 so it is like 20x10x16. I think it would look better if it were a few inches shorter like the 10, or even maybe the 15 would work because it is the same height as the 10 and will would fit on my table.

Reading these forums is getting me more and more confused though because it seems like it is half and half both ways with people saying it is ok to put a betta in with other fish and those with horror stories. I would hate to finally give my betta a bigger tank and then have something happen to it! So I don't know what I should do now. I wonder if its best just to get a 5 and leave him in there alone.

hi
in some cases when it comes down to it,the choice is yours,
and sometimes it's still not easy.
me personally(and i have never kept a betta)(yet)
would have him in his own tank(gives me an idea for one of my tanks )
there will often be conflicting answers, because what works
for one person may not work for others,
make him a lovely home, and he will be the show piece
of your table.
then join us all with MTS(multie tank syndrome) and have
another tank with the other fish you would like, :)
