HELP! Betta is dying :(

I will read more after I post, but I'm afraid he won't make it much longer so am looking for quick answers on how to help him.

I have had him for 3 days. He is in a 3 gallon tank with a filter and a heater. Tank was not cycled but I added a small amount of Tetra Start Smart when I put him in. Using Top Fin water conditioner and testing water every day.

PH 7.6
Ammonia was between 0 and .25 this morning, so I did a 50% water change. Tested an hour later and it seemed ok
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0

Temp in tank is 76
He has been really laid back and hanging out at the bottom since I brought him home, but would move around if I tapped the cage. Went to get a different heater to get the temp in the tank up, but when I came home he was laying on his side in the bottom of the tank. He swims sideways and gets frantic if I try to get him to move. I put a little of the tank water in the cup he came in and put him in there so he doesn't have to swim far to get air. He doesn't seem to be inclined to do that though.

What can I do? I have another betta that I have had for a few months and never had any issues. I don't know what to do. Thanks in advance for any advice.

That happened to my first betta too. I do not know what to say, but do NOT use Bettafix. I dont want to make you lose hope but he probably wont last long. Is he breathing heavily? Try putting him in a smaller tank with 25% of water so he wont have to struggle to get up for air. Is he eating normally? What else changed when you first noticed he was sick? (did fin colors change, ect.)

To be honest, I have been extremely paranoid about him dying since I brought him home. He has been really lethargic and hanging out at the bottom, but if I annoyed him he would swim up and around, so I thought maybe he just had a completely different personality than my other betta. I read that raisin the tank temperature could help, so I was out buying a different heater, he was like this when I came home.

I waited 24 hours after i got him to feed him and i feed 1 time a day (3-4 pellets of Hikari Betta Bio-Gold).

I just tested the water again and the ammonia seems to be not quite at 0, but no where near as dark on the chart as .25 ppm.

well, i recommend that you put no other plants or decoration besides one little tree or cave that he likes and you can see him in. Are there any other fish in the tank with him?

Hmmm, everything check out to me. He might just be getting used to his new home. Some bettas take a while to get comfy enough.
You said he was laying on his side?? Not floating though right?

Yes, he is having a very hard time. He is in 3 inches of water now and can't seem to get to the top for air, he keeps swimming down and sideways.
