I just got my first betta fish three days ago. Day before yesterday and yesterday morning, he was swimming around a lot, active and happy-looking. Then, I changed the water. It was starting to feel slimy, and I needed to put in the plastic thing with holes under the rocks to help keep the tank cleaner with the pump I have, so I needed to take out all of the water. I added all new water, put StressCoat in it, and waited till the heater heated it up, then added my fish back into it. So it was the same conditions as when I first introduced him to the tank on Saturday. When I got back to my room at 8 PM last night, he was kind of laying down under the heater (his favorite spot), and I thought he was sleeping, since he would move around a bit if I disturbed the tank. He moved a little this morning, but then settled back into his spot, still laying on the floor of the tank. I got back from class earlier and he was swimming around a bit, and he would pause and his head would start diving down and the rest would follow until he was lying on the bottom again. Now he's back under the heater, again laying on the bottom of the tank. What's wrong?
Also, he didn't eat last night or this morning, since he didn't move from his spot really. I keep him in a 1-gallon tank that has a heater and an air pump thing. The water temperature is 78. He's the only one in the tank.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Sorry about your betta.
Even though conditions are similar, it's possible the water change just stressed him out. It's also unfortunately possible he was ill when you bought him and the signs are showing up now. If you fill out the sticky posted we can better help you!
Maybe. He seemed perfectly fine on Saturday and Sunday, and then suddenly he couldn't swim anymore, he couldn't float. He'd swim up, and then stop and drop back down like a rock. It was horrible to watch.
It happens a lot with pet store fish, it is not uncommon at all for them to die in the first week for what seems like no reason. It wasn't the tank. A completely dry tank sitting in a store wouldn't carry anything over in treated water for your betta. However, now that a fish has died in there, I'd advise you to wash it with warm water and a little bit of bleach, rinse extremely thoroughly, and let it air dry. This will insure nothing carries over to whatever gets to live there next. I hope you stick around and try again! There's a lot of knowledge to be had here, and a lot of fellow Washingtonians, Oregonians, and a few Idaho people as well.
Thanks! I rinsed it out already, but I'll see if I can find some bleach too. I think I'll try again, bettas are cheap ;) And yeah, I noticed there are a lot of Northwest people on here. Not born here, but raised! I love Washington. (I'm an east sider though ;])
The user Gizmo in Spokane. I'm from right outside downtown Seattle, lived in Pullman for a bit for school, now I live right outside Portland in Vancouver WA. I've lived all over the state! It's great here.
Also sorry if you already know this but be sure not to use soap to clean fishy things :)
