adaptations in polluted water

What adaptation allows Bettas to survive in small amounts of polluted water?

Probably high capacity Livers and Kidneys as well as some special osmatic membranes for excreting the bad stuff. I don't know how true it might be but their ability to breath air at the surface could be a major way to get oxygen without taking in large amounts of waste from having to take in a lot of water for oxygen.
