I have heard that some people add salt to their tanks. Is this a good idea? How much salt/gallon?

No, I don't add salt unless it is brackish or marine but for brackish and marine, we use marine salt, not aquarium salt nor epsom salts. Adding salt in a freshwater setup is IMO a waste of time and money. I'd chuck the aquarium salt to the bin. You can simply use table salt which is cheaper and only about a fraction the cost of the aquarium salt.

This has been debated several times and I still find it amusing lfs employees advise the use of aquarium salt everytime you do a water change.
