What is this?

I noticed this flake stuff on the surface of my tank before I put my fish in and figured it was dust from the new gravel. (I rinsed the gravel many times before putting it in.)
My fish has been in there for a week and is acting fine, but I am a little concerned about this stuff on the top of the water's surface. I just replaced half the water in his tank yesterday and the stuff is still there (it came back). Is this normal? The tank is 2.5 gallons and unfiltered.

(I think I asked about this before but I didn't have a picture. Sorry for a repeat if I did! Could this stuff just be there because there's no water flowing?)

It's just a protein film. Nothing serious, it happens when water isn't moved by a filter or air stone. There's absolutely nothing to worry about. I've gotten it in every single unfiltered tank I've ever had.

I used to get that in my betta tank all the time. You could try to skim it off with a cup if it bothers you. I find that having floating plants helps keep it from happening or at least minimize its visibility.

EDIT: Also, beautiful fish!!!

And if you leave the protein on the surface of the water for too long without doing a change, it'll clump up and start sinking to the bottom, making for a mess if you stir your gravel during the change... Guh.

Thank you everyone! I wanted to make sure it wasn't something toxic.

I'm going to clean that stuff off the top and tomorrow the tank is getting a full water change.

The tank light is working fine now. :)
I decided to leave the filter off because it was moving the water around too much.

that good to hear. i personally dont keep the filter in the 2.5 as the IAL water for Nelliel is comprimised by the carbon filter. there are ways to baffle the filter should you ever want to put it into service in the future.

:) I might look into baffling the filter sometime.
