I'm really considering getting another betta to be Turbo's friend. =] Of course, he/she would have his/her own ten-gallon tank and be beside Turbo. One of the main things that I'm not sure about is the gender. I've compiled a list of pros and cons for both males and females to help me decide.
Males: Pros - Easier to find; pretty, flowing tails; I have a male, so I already have
some experience with males; cute bubblenests! Cons - Can't breed them, if I decide to (which I probably won't, anyway);
Turbo wouldn't ever get to meet a female of his species, which I
find pretty sad; I'd only get to experience one gender of betta
fish, and I'm sure females are great, too! Females: Pros - They have large, cute, expressive eyes (Males do, too, but the
focus is mostly on the eyes with females, because the tails are the
main focus with the males, I guess. Maybe. Both have cute eyes.);
I could breed them, if I chose to; Turbo would have a little female
friend; I could have one of each gender; most likely less problems
with tails, such as getting them torn, since females have shorter
tails. Cons - They don't have the long, flowing tails, but they're still pretty and,
I'm sure, full of personality; If she does get fin rot or something
similar, it would reach her body sooner than it would a male with
longer fins; "eggy" can look like bloated, but I know there are
people here who can help me determine which it is (); I have no
experience with female bettas.
What do you all think? :) Any input will be appreciated!
Try a female! I love love love my female, and she's actually very pretty (in my eyes). I love how they're more willing to jump then males (so be careful). You can put a pellet on your finger and watch your female jump up and kiss you. Maybe it's just my fish, but my males can't jump higher then a centimetre and my female has reached 3 inches :)
Also, i find that they're constantly moving around and around and around. They never stop for a break, and it's so cute when they flare- they don't have a beard so it's just their gill flaps.
Well, im not explaining it very well. You could even have a sorority in your 10 gal but that would be more work :)
I think I know what you mean with the beard thing.. Is that the dark-colored portion under the gill flaps? That you see kind of poking out whenever the betta flares? At first, I was like "What is that on that betta??? O.O!". xD! I thought something was wrong with the betta. Lol. Now, I'm wondering what it looks like when a female flares.. I have considered a sorority, actually. =] Then, the females would outnumber the male. xD And, for some reason, I'm paranoid about mixing up my fish.. Like.. What if I get five females, and two have similar color patterns, and I'm not able to tell them apart, so I just call them one another's names? o.o My betta does that, too! :D He jumps up at my finger whenever he thinks I'm going to feed him. That must be true; Turbo doesn't jump very high, but it's still pretty cute. xD I was showing my sister today. He's eaten from my finger before. It feels so cute. Lol.
I've heard a lot about females having more personality and being more active than males. Maybe, the stereotypical emotional female thing is true with fish, too. Lol.
I brought her home today. =] She's a Cambodian, I believe... An off-white body with red-ish fins and some red-ish around her head. She's acclimating right now, floating in her soon-to-be new temporary home. =) SO cute.
