ok so I am planning on getting a 2.5 with a mini tetra whisper along with a new betta
I know the water will stay cleaner if I cycle, but I have never done it before. can I just add, like that bacterial starter stuff (prime, i think it's called?) and some live plants and let it run for a week? I also read something about creating ammonia by adding fish food to the water? and what happens when I change the cartridge?

Do you have other tanks? If so do a water change on one of them and put the pulled water into the new tank with the rest fresh water.

To make a tetra whisper 3i capable of sustaining a cycle you'll need a sponge pre-filter to put over the bottom end. This pre-filter requires its own basic maintenance when doing partial water changes but the combination WILL sustain a cycle and keep the tank very clean.

Any larger filter would be too much flow.

Relax about bumping threads up, it isn't necessary. We get to these things in about six hours.
