Exclamation Help?

Alright, so I brought home a baby betta today. He's extremely small and looks like he'll be a CT. I dropped two Hikari pellets in his small tank. (Right after I had him acclimated I put him in a small critter keeper.) And I watched him for a while. he didn't want to eat so I left him alone and went to play some videogames. I remember when I picked him out, I made sure there were no signs of deformation or disease. He looked perfectly healthy. I come back a little while later and the pellets are gone, and his gills are inflamed. They have white patches around them that look like flakes that may fall off at any second. His gills are red and look irritated. I got really worried so that's why I'm posting this up. Should I be worried? I don't know what happened I'm guessing the pellets were too big for him so he may have forced them down? I don't know.

Did you acclimate him to water chemistry as well as temperature?

Start him on 1 tsp/gal aquarium salt if his gills are still red and inflamed. Change the kritter keeper water 100% every day.

It's completely normal for a store bought fish to become ill within a week or two time span of purchase since quality of care at the pet store is often lacking.
