I havn't set up my new tank yet :o I'm doing it today cause I'm getting a new boy and I want him to be comfortable so i bought this: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Aqua-Cultu...allon/17248151

the biggest tank i have had is a unfiltered 1 gal so that means 100% weekly changes :/ so I have no idea how much of a water change I'd do on a 2.5 filtered

If you have a filter, you need to cycle the tank. There's a sticky on this forum about that. I can't explain it very well because I hardly know how to do it myself xD

is the filter useless without cycling though? and how do i know if it is cycled?

I did read that sticky but it seems hard lol soooo can I just go buy prime or something like that? or do i gotta get plants, or ammonia, or a sponge thingy in the filter blah blah blah

Yes, a filter is useless without cycling. You have to buy a test kit in order to know if it's cycled, and those are pricey. If you don't want the hassle, just do 1 50% change a week and 1 100% change a week. That's WITHOUT a filter.

O.o ohh wow... I really dont want to do a 100%... guess i'll try to cycle it.

so the carbon in the cartridge does nothing??
I that what you are supposed to do is add a bacterial starter (prime, I guess) and an ammonia source (piece of shrimp or pure ammonia) and wait for the ammonia to go to zero

I'm not sure that second one is too large -- I'm not sure the lobster is very big in that video -- but that first one? For sure.

I think I've heard someplace that they can be combined...someone correct me if I'm wrong? Which would leave room for cheating, unfortunately.

Still pretty neat though.
