Is my tank ok?

I took a picture of Beaux's tank today and I want to make sure it's ok for him. I just got him from a friend who didn't want him and wasn't taking care of him so I want to make sure he's healthy and happy.



I have a 2.5 gallon. No filter, gravel, a heater, a thermometer, a ceramic cup, some water wisteria and some kind of fern. The tank was really for reptiles but I couldn't find a 2.5 gallon that had holes in the top for the fish to breathe. Also, I've read about water test kits. Should I get one? I have a vague idea about what they are and how they work. Would anyone mind explaining them in a little more detail?

For this set-up you don't need a water test kit.
Your tanks is a good basic setup for betta and he should be a very happy fish there as long as you keep up with frequent water changes.
In smaller, unfiltered tanks you should always keep bettas water clean. I suggest 2-3 full water changes a week but you might get different opinions here.
Do you know how mich water your tank holds?

I agree.. don't really need a test kit, unless you want one.

On that size tank I would do two or three water changes a week at least one of those should be a 100% change.

With everything in it, I think it holds a little more than one gallon of water.
