At what age or size can fry cope with a regular (i.e. not sponge) filter?

No they can't.
The current is too strong and they will be sucked in by the intake.

I wouldn't feel comfortable until after they have been jarred and fully grown.
Are you thinking having one in a tank or the entire spawn?
If you had one in the tank to grow out, you could cover the intake of the filter to prevent it from being sucked in.

I guess it depends on how well the intake was buffered. My filters are always buffered on the intake and outflow so my 1in fry would be fine with one.

Thanks, can I ask how you buffer your intake?

And, I know it varies, but could you estimate what age they are in weeks?

You can buffer it with a stocking or filter wool/sponge to prevent your fry from being sucked up. I believe there is pre-filter sponge available that people use in tanks with shrimp and other smaller fauna.
