OP, for cheap hiding places, I used PVC pipe and my sorority girls love it as they have a place to hide in the bottom. Just thought I'd share :)

Hey Olympia, have you seen Flourite Onyx Sand or black Flourite? It may save you having to buy two bags, since it is darn attractive stuff as well as being nice for plants.

I've never heard of plants dying because they were added all at once...I've always added mine in huge great dollops. You know how it is - you can never stop at buying just one. :p

Would you mean this? I doesn't say flourite so I wasn't sure.. I don't have much choice in pet stores and I can't order online, I'll check the LFS but ever since they upgraded to furries due to lack of business they have way less product Dx

I was debating between a white (natural) look and a black (show off fish colours) look. The red of the substrate could be a good median. I'm planning for a school of cories though, and all the plant substrates look like they might be unsafe for cories, so I thought I need sand on top..

I emailed the Seachem people a while back, and apparently all of their substrates are made to be safe for catfish and loaches (since they burrow). I don't know about the CaribSea stuff, though.

I'll write down the name and if they don't have it, maybe the LFS will order it for me. Which could delay my set up D: I think I'll go for the original or the dark however. The red is too red and the black is too black. xD Seems like a good product since you never have to replace it. The images DO look kind of like the rocks are sharp though o-o

I just read that the caribsea sands are in fact unsafe for cories since it's actually little glass shards that can be sharp o-o In fact, none of the caribsea products are listed as burrower friendly ;-;
Hopefully I'll find that seachem stuff or another brand..
Would regular play sand be okay?
