Is my betta fish sick?

Alright, well I always look at my little betta fish..
But today as I was looking at him,
his gills were sticking out and at first
I thought it was MOLD sticking all around his face.
But seconds later they flattened out again..
Was he taking a big gasp of breath?
And I noticed that his gills were a red lilac color..
My fish is usually BLUE.
Does he have unionized ammonia?
I'm so scared >< I don't want anything bad to happen to him..
But he's eating well.. Maybe I'm just being paranoid and
never actually paid attention to the color of his gills before.
I'm confused! Will someone help,please? :)

Your betta was probably flaring. This is just a "this is my house" symbol, and shows he is active. The gills changing colors, I don't knoe. Bettas change colors a lot - the betta I have now was whitish/purple when I bought him, and now he is a maroon color.

I would agree that you Betta is probably flaring. As for the color of the gills I assume your talking about the little membrane or "beard" that sticks out when they are flaring.
