Well, i have a smallish tank for my betta (a Dymax IQ3) and most of the equipment tends to be big, so tanks as that one tend to fill fast leaving the fish with no room, another member recommended you get a thermometer so, as you said, not to cook the poor guy. Heh, check this one out as i got a similar one for my IQ3, a nice strip that does not take space:
