Tailbiting problems...

Is there anything that can be done about tailbiting? Anything to prevent it?

My beautiful HM Ezio finally started getting his fins back after suffering from finrot when I first got him. I medicated him, and it started growing back. About three days ago, he started tailbiting while I was in school. When I came back, more than half of the top half of his tail was gone.

If I see him in the middle of doing something he's not supposed to be doing, I tap on the glass to get him to stop, and that usually works, but I've yet to catch him tailbiting. What should I do? Are there any "toys" I could get him that could keep him entertained otherwise, so maybe he won't resort to chewing on his tail when he's bored?

So far, he has a floating log, a little hut to hide in, and a few silk plants in his tank; basically everything my old fish, Ciel, had. I plan on revamping it when I get my 25 gallon. He's gonna get a bunch of plants and some shrimp and cories. I'm sure they'd keep him entertained enough, but still...

Any suggestions?

Keep his environment as interesting as possible by changing it around with every water change. Grab some extra toys (a coffee mug, a lego house, a candle holder, anything) and give him something a little different each time.
