the pet store calls his coloring a rainbow..but I haven't run across that word. Says both him and the female that they have can produce any color...hence rainbow? Is he just a regular veiltail? What is is color classification? People don't breed veiltails anymore much right? I found his perfect mate, she has bubbles right now too...looks just like him and about his size, my stepdaughter wants to breed...should we? Or more hassle then it worth? thanks! Oh you can see a second pic of him in my albums.
He's a very handsome veiltail! I'm not sure about his coloring maybe wild type? There's a thread on the betta care section that has a whole list. People still breed veiltails, my Petsmart basically only has veltails and my Petco has a lot of them. Breeding betta fish takes a lot of time and money for the right tank etc. We have a couple people on here thatare excellent breeder that can give you great tips. Just post whatever questions you have in the betta breeding section.
thanks for the reply! I am not totally in for the breeding...but she is 11 and I remember when I was her age...so I thought that I would look into it. (I used to breed horses for a living) About 6 months ago I agreed to breed when he had a huge bubble nest, went to pet supplies plus and bought a female veiltail ( got her home and next to him and found out she was a beatiful crown tail..beautiful tiger striping and all) Gave her to a friend who has since taught her tricks....but while at petco last week we were shown a beauty..a female veil tail with his coloring with her own bubble nest and Ryley wanted to breed again, so I have been reading up on it. My thing is what the heck do I do with the babies? I can only give so many away. Thanks again!
Breeding bettas is alot of time and patience, I have been breeding for a while. I jar mine and when they become full size my LFS always orders the correct bowls and I give them to them. If you really don't know what you are doing its heartbreaking. Hope this help with making up your mind. thanks Cindylou:shock:
Definitely a VERY handsome VT boy you have there For colors you can check out this thread if you haven't already...though, judging by the pic on you avvy, I agree with BFC that he looks to be maybe a wild....not sure though.
I'm by now means a breeding expert, but I have a spawn of about 50-80(I'm horrible at counting....)VTs at 7 weeks, healthy and happy as can be, so I must be doing something right xD
But I spent quite a while doing as much research as possible...this is definitely something that shouldn't be taken lightly. A spawn can yield anything from a few to hundreds of babies and your going to have to separate all the males as soon as he start seeing aggression, that means a lot of little containers around that you have to change daily if you end up with a big spawn. And then theres also the issue with finding homes, as you mentioned. If you if don't have a plan for homes or a place you can give/sell a lot of them too then you could be stuck with a LOT of bettas.
And thats just a few of many challenges that come with breeding...you also need live food for the fry that your going to have to culture/hatch yourself, need space for all the jars and containers for when you need to separate them, need to have time to do PWCs every day-sih.....I could go on and on....but I'm too lazy to do so, and I'm sure your sick of my rambling xD But, head to google, look up betta breeding, read every sight you can, and feel free to ask any questions
Thank you everyone for your replies! I WILL NOT be breeding Bettas...just enjoying my fish...but look at this bubble nest, it is best one ever: Ps Dragon Fish the betta in your avatar..what is he? There was one who could have been his twin at the local pet store and I was IN LOVE, for the past 2 weeks fought against the idea of buying him...they called him a crowntail, but not even close I thought a twin tail delta? he was a royal blue color and the most beautiful fish in a tiny tiny octogon container...(only $5.00)I finally went back to buy him a few days ago his bowl was empty and he was gone!! I should have reacted sooner, dumb me.
What a beautiful bubblenest!! Its always fun to see a nest in your bettas tank, I know it always makes me happy when I wake up to one
The betta in my avatar currently is my Silver Dragon HM(Halfmoon), Alphonse Haha, he was an LPS find too! Hmm....maybe he wasn't from a breeder, like I suspected....
