Can a few female Betta be kept in the same tank? It is 44 gallons with lots of plants and hiding places. There will also be 4 Honey Gourami, 6 Harliquin Raspora, 8 Neon Tetra, and 3 Cory cats.
:-DThank you so much I can handle 4 more fish in my tank. I have been trying for a while now to decide on a 3-6 inch type of fish to put in there and today thought about female bettas. Would it be better to get all four to put in the tank at the same time?
I have gouramis and a king betta sharing the same tank. If your tank is large enough, and well planted, you can do it. There may be some nipping, and a lot depends on particular fish personalities.
My gourami tank (30 gallon H) has 1 flame male, 1 gold female, 1 pearl female, and 1 king betta male. There's also 5 boesimani rainbows, 7 cardinal tetras, 2 serpae tetras, and last - my neice's female guppy (who was dropping babies in their 1 gallon tank) ... so I took momma guppy to do population control. My Gouramis don't mind extra protein if they find fry in all the top floating Watersprite.
Momma guppy seems very happy to be away from pestering male guppy in that tiny tank... while I do feel bad that she's solo, not enough to get her guppy companions though.
i personally would never put a beta in wiht gouramies having seen personally what happens, maybe females are different because thier fins are shorter, but i would realllly watch them closely if you decide to do it.
and aww how sad they eat the babies, lol. i love guppies i have a 10 gallon with about 50 guppies because they dont stop reproducing lol. but they all seem very very happy, the more the merrier
well, I was on the fence, I had a love/hate relationship with the flame gourami at first. I got him with the 30 gallon - inherited him - and he did not behave with the gold girl - so I moved him in with a small betta sorority that I had going, and he was nippy for the first few days - but, behaving... and then a few weeks later, he was causing the girls no end of stress stripes so I put him back in with the gourami females - and low and behold, the gourami girls had grown enough that he couldn't pick on them any more. He ignores the king betta too because they're the same size. - And, it's been a month since adding him to this group and all is peaceful.
Actually, for having such 'large' aggressive type fish - the tank is my most peaceful community tank. I have less worries from them than I do with my blended rainbow threadfins/neons matched with one betta male. Why? because the rainbow threadfins could easily turn on the betta and nip at him. I watched them do this to my crowntail in the 12 gallon eclipse. Now they're all in the 20 - it may be peaceful, but then - I wonder what I'm getting into by adding a betta in there with them. (bigger tank should remove the aggression, but any community test with long finned (slower swimming) fish is exactly that - an experiment. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't.)
