Ive got a couple of males who are ready to jar tonight, as i am cleaning out their 1/2 gallon jars i started wondering, adults like cover and hide spots. Would a little fry in a big jar prefer some cover? Like maybe a small piece of java moss? I know it makes it alittle more difficult to do the 100% water changes but not too much, if it is worth it. Im going to put the jar near the tank of fry so he doesnt get depressed, i just worry he will feel too "open" or does this only apply after they are alone awhile?
I put java ferns and/or java moss in my jars. It adds a tiny work load into it, but not to the point where its ridiculously unbearable. You just got to take out the plant before you clean the jars. In a sense it helps lower nitrate levels, but if your doing water change frequently then it really serves no purpose. I just have them in there to give the fry a feel of something to hide and cover them.
Well i put a tiny bit in, and he picks at it, i only have 9 fry though and hes the only one jarred so far. Not too much work. Now if i had 100+ id not do it ) I was just wondering if they needed that "sense of security" and decided it couldnt hurt, so far he hasnt sulked too much and he does enjoy it being in there. Its a 1/2 gallon jar and im doing 100% water changes every other day. Hopefully thats not too much/little
Thanks for all the input.
1/2 gallons can go one week without a water change but every 4 days is better. For quart jars I change every other day, 1/2 gallons every 3, and one gallons once a week.
Its good to know Cajun, i know in your case you have many more babies then i do, i wouldnt do it either in your shoes lol
TY Vampire, good to know i can slow it down a bit.
Personally, I would if I had a small spawn. In larger spawns I am sure it would hinder a process you need to make everything work smoothly with water changes. I'm sure your fry will love it.
Oh yes, if I only had a handful to jar, I'd maybe do it.
I say maybe, b/c cleaning out the spawn tank today, I noticed just how much poop java moss holds! Its like instead of on the floor, all the snail poop was stuck to the moss. Very annoying!
BTW, I use gallon jars, I clean them every other to every 3 days. But really if I go every 3 days, I add Prime, b/c I have tested the water and ammonia does show up. I know not all of it is toxic, but still don't like to see it. I wish I could get my hands on the Nh4 (or is the nh3 that's the toxic form, I never remember) test kit
i have guppy grass in all my jar's easy to take out and deal with and the fish love it .
