Alright so i have two male betta splendens, one white and pink named Jeffrey and the other red and navy and purple named Malcolm. I got them over my springbreak so about...ehh roughly april 7th or 8th. i got them at my local wal-mart and they looked terrible. i used to have an all red betta named ruby so ive always enjoyed betta fish. ruby was with me for a good 3 1/2 years. but he got sick and died, im guessing. but about that time we were getting ready to move so i hadnt had time to start up my obsession again. but i was at wal-mart with my younger brother and my sister and we saw the fish becuase i work there for no pay taking care of whats there. there where about 20-30 bettas all looking sickly and miserable. but i only had money for two and a small divider tank. so thats what i got, and the obbsession was reborn. well after i had gotten home i got them all together (so i thought) and i mean this divider tank was horrible. it wasnt even a gallon the whole thing combine and it had a hard plastic plant that they could hurt themself on and it was just horrible. well that night i went to my best friends house and i spent 6 1/2 hours on her laptop reserching the fourums on this website :-D i though i had it all figure out, but i couldnt ask questions for i didnt have an account and i didnt see the random answer question was obvious (i put too much though in it)
so now im a memeber and im 14 lol and i need help. becuase my parents said this is my project.
but i went out and i bought two 1 gallon critter carriers and that's what theyre in. theres a squishy annenome in there becuase i noticed they like to hide. along with one silk plant in each and a shell i found in florida (all in each) they have black&& white gravel and thermometers and the tempature is relitivly low right now only about 75ish and i only have on light. i havent gotten anymoney to buy another light and heaters but they seem to be doing just fine.
i feed them at 6am everymorning, the same thinga very little pinch (not even a pinch really) ofthis betta food i picked up with brine shrimp in it. and on mondays and fridays at 9:00 pm i feed them 3 or 4 blood worms.
am i doing enough or do i need to do more?
they seem to be alright but im no expert. help? any help would really be appriciated. i love this website its so easy, and i have betta fever haha. thank so much though.
Hello and welcome to FishForum. The one gallon critter keepers will be just fine for your bettas. Any kind of plants and decorations that are soft and don't have sharp edges will be fine. You might want to get a thermometer to monitor their water temperature. Mid 70's is ok but you may need heaters in the winter. I just turned my heaters off because my room is very warm right now. Most people feed their bettas pellets but you can feed flakes that are made for bettas like Tetra Bettamin tropical medley. I feed mine Hikari Betta bio gold pellets. You can also feed freeze dried or frozen daphnia or brine shrimp. I feed mine daphnia, bloodworms and brine shrimp. I alternate feeding those every other day and most of us here fast our bettas once a week to help clean out their digestive tracts and prevent constipation and bloating. Hope this helps and feel free to ask more questions .
okay thank you so much, im glad you responded. i've seen yor posts and you seem to know what you're talking about haha, but thank you. i have a thermometer and i'll invest in heaters soonish becuase even in the summer my house is kinda cold and my desk that they're on gets pretty cold when the A/C is on. i'm trying to get someone to take out my tv so i can puit them on my dresser becuause its warmer up there. but again, thank you.
haha agreed. my friend walked over and came in (she just kinda walks in shes here so much) and she saw me at the computer and she didnt have to look at what website i'm on here all the time. I LOVEMY BETTAS haha. everyone does they're addicting.
haha, my mother would kill me but i think that possibly i'm going ot go get a female. ugh i went to walmart this morning and wanted to kill the manager. there were 3 dead female crowntail bettas (i had to go price heaters) and i freaked. my sister works there so she was with me and i got them taken care of. it was so sad. i almost cried while doing it but i changed all the water to the 10 healthyish (well, alive) bettas and fed them and they perked up a little, ugh. im addicted haha.
I have all my bettas on my dresser too. lol You're probably not too far from where I live so you would get the same type of weather I get. I think summer is fine without heaters but you'll want to get some before winter. You have plenty of time yet. lol I know what you mean about being addicted! I have 6, 2 females and 4 males and I would love to have more. I love my bettas, too. I think most of us on here are totally addicted. The more we have, the more we want. lol
So true! I swear we just got our first one around Easter and we had him in a small tank. Now he's in a 5 gallon and I have 2 more in a 10 gallon and I'm getting another 10 gallon and hopefully another Betta!
They really are amazing fish!
i know, i love them. and they're sooo pretty. my fish are my bestfriends i let my little brother help me clean tanks and i think he made the water too hot and dint check the thermometer and he put Jeffrey back in and he almost died. he started going back to the top more often and sunk to the bottom so i took him out and put in him a glass with some of Malcolms water (not the cleanest be definately cooler) and i finished tanks then i had ti do something on the computer so i brought the glass in with me and he perked up after awhile but i had to cool down the water, i was crying too it was so sad
That water must have been really hot to have made the fish react that way. I'm going on vacation in 3 weeks and I'll be gone for 2 weeks and I'm already having separation anxiety! lol I do have someone who knows about fish who will be taking care of them for me, though. Yep, bettas are pretty special and so pretty. I love watching mine swim around. They have great personalities, too.
