I got my bettas a package of frozen bloodworms. I chipped off a small piece, and wet it w/ my treated water, and let it thaw, then sucked it up with a syringe. Then I squirted it into the tank, but while he caught a few of the ones that went past him, most sank or landed on a plant leaf.
Is there a better way to do this? I'm guessing I should have put it in slowly with a chopstick or something, right? He knows where the feeding corner is, so he goes there when I'm feeding him.
I use tooth picks or tweezers to feed mine. Have to be careful to not poke the fish.. I will swish it off before they get there, or keep the pointy end away from them if they are wanting to eat right off the tooth pick. Otherwise, tweezers are good to use.
I recommend tweezers as well. Unless you have a tank full of fish that will also eat bloodworms, I would not squirt a ton in their at once. The average betta takes awhile to chew up and completely ingest a single bloodworm so if you squirt many in their at once then alot of it will go wasted as the betta definitely won't be able to eat them all in time.
Tweezers and q-tips
I usually use tweezers, it's really entertaining to see my girls jump when they see them lol
But when I can't find my betta specific tweezers I pull out a q-tip and it works just as well but they fall off a lot easier
Thanks guys! I'll try the stick approach. I didn't put that much in with the syringe anyway...it was mostly water, but he definitely missed a few pieces. I'm used to feeding whole cubes in my marine tank so trying to chip off a miniscule amount was hard LOL I put half a cube in the fridge to thaw for tomorrow's feeding. Do you guys rinse your bloodworms?
Ok, so are frozen bloodworms just a treat? How often should I feed those? I also have the Hikari pellets that he seems to like better than the first sample packet I got w/ his cube.
What should the first few ingredients read for a healthier pellet for a betta? (like in dog foods, the first two ingredients are the most dominant, so I buy foods that list chicken or fish or lamb first).
Some form of fish/meat.. wheat/grain is just filler.
Frozen can be fed more regularly than freeze dried - I will feed ones not being conditioned frozen blood worms once every 2-3 days. Some people opt to feed them once a day. As long as you have pellets in the mix to give them a more balanced nutrition, they should be fine.
I feed mine until their bellies start to swell.. I don't count how many per se, but you should be able to judge how much you think is best when feeding them.
