What's wrong with my Betta

Normally, he is very active and flaring at me (I play with him alot) He has the top of his tank covered with bubbles (happiness, right?) but for the last 2 days he is either sitting on the bottom, almost lying on his side, he only goes up to get some air (he might hang there awhile). He's in a 3 gal tank with normal params and temp is 80 degrees. I recently added a cave for him to hide in (1 month ago) it has formed some green algae on the top, could that be making him sick? Any help or suggestions would be soooo appreciated - I would really hate to lose this little guy!

Thanks
Lori

Define 'normal parameters' please. What are they exactly (tested by a liquid kit)?

Also, algae growth is usually a sign of either excessive light or water that is high in nitrates. Laying on the bottom is generally a sign of bad water quality or being too cold. but it can be other things.

Has this tank been cycled as well?
