Getting my first shipment in tomorow! I would love to hear how everyone goes about acclimatizing thai fish, timelines and step by step would be loved.
Thankies
I don't think you'll be able to fit a coffee mug in that tank you have. I looks like one of the tanks I just got rid of and it was only able half a gallon. I had a silk plant when I had that one so maybe get one of those if you don't already? It might help.
You are right. It is a small tank. But I am cycling his 5 gallon and getting it ready for him. He does have a silk plant in there for him to hide and he just recently discovered it. I can't wait to get him in a bigger tank.
If you have a clean, regular clear plastic cup, you can probably get away with that, too, considering theyre smaller than mugs. I wouldnt keep it in there forever, but hey! Worth a shot. I did that with my neurotic/scaredycat fish (LOL) and he liked it and derped in it, sometimes he didnt see it well and was like WHAAAAAA?!? XD
My boyfriend just brought me small plastic cups from his work..... I could use those as a hide out. He seems better now. I left him alone for a few hours after he found the plant and started sleeping. When I got back, he was ready to eat. Which I am taking that as a good sign.
Yeah it will heal as long as he keeps from biting it now. c: With proper water changes and keeping it at around 78-80 degrees you should start to see clear fin growth in a few days.
I've heard of epsom salt to help with this? But don't take the advice from me. I'd listen to a more experienced member first.
eengland, did you properly acclimate him? Because if you just put him in the water right after getting him without an acclimation process that I believe takes 1-4 days, then he might get sick or very stressed ):
And for the OP. If I get an import I'll be doing this... so I'll suggest an acclimation process.
Dump the water the fish came in into a seperate container (Fish too!).
Get a container with roughly the same amount of water from the fish tank.
Use a turkey baster and suck out probably 1/4 of the way up it (And dump it)
Then fill it 1/4 of the way with fish tank hour and put it in the imports container. Let him sit for half an hour to an hour. Repeat until the container with fish tank water is empty, then you can float him in the tank for a bit and just dump the container in.
Imports take awhile to acclimate, the params could be miles away from yours. Warning now I'm no expert in this stuff, it's just what I learned once. But better safe than sorry! Good luck with your import.
:-( i only acclimated him for about an hour. maybe an hour and a half. I floated his bag in tank for a while and pour some tank water into him bag. I did that a few a times before I put him in the water. I am getting a new heater. I have noticed it keeps the water at 74/75. At first, it kept the water at 72 until I changed the water and made it warmer. New heater should be here today. I placed something over the opening of the tank to keep the air above the tank warm. My room stays pretty cold and it would cause shock for sure. He is up there now making bubbles. Today is a good day for Gershwin! :-D
Don't worry, I wasn't home when my Thailand imports arrived so mum just dumped them into a tank of dechlorinated water. They're both fine, even if next time I'd definitely be doing the drip-acclimatization method just to ease them into the transition a little better.
Congrats on your new fish! That pic is for sure tailbiting! Two of my nine are STILL doing it, one is quite bad with it. *sigh*
Most of the males had done a bit of it during shipment but stopped after they had been in my care. A normal reaction to stress and having their tails in the way within a dark box, not knowing what's in their face;-)
I followed these acclimating instructions. They are from my transhippers webpage.
He seems happy today. He has been swimming around a lot. I apparently got a little hungry fellow. He is always ready to eat. He has started greeting me when I walk up. At first he would hide. I think he is settling in.
eengland, if you need help or have something to discuss, it's better to start your own thread than to hijack someone else's. The OP is looking for answers and it doesn't help if you're asking something else. So, make your own next time.
To the OP- when I got my import, I acclimated over an entire day. I poured the water and him into a cup (easier to switch the water). Then I floated that in the tank until the water was the same temp (like 15-30 minutes). Then about every hour or so, I dumped out a bit of the water he was in and replaced it with the tank water. Longer acclimation is better than shorter. I'm sure he would have been fine if I didn't take so long, but I felt better doing that. Gives him plenty of time to adjust.

I wasn't trying to hijack anyone's thread. I had the same question as her because I was receiving a betta from Thailand also. I wasn't hijacking anything from emmalea. I am sorry if emmalea feels that way. Wasn't my intent.
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
