I couldn't get a great video of what he was doing this morning. He isn't divebombing persay but he is kind of crazy swimming back and forth. He is not flaring his gills though like he is trying to fight his reflection. I just wanted to see if this is happy swimming or bad swimming?

YAY!! Ok I was worried he was seeing his reflection. He didn't want to take food this morning but I did feed him late last night instead of in the morning because I bought the wrong kind of food =( I will see if he eats today. He is much happier with the tank water being at 80 degrees. He is much more active! He loves doing loops around the heater lol. Once I get some more decor for him i think he will be happier. Right now it is kind of boring in there.

Crossroads,

I will be doing that. They didn't have anything suitable IMO at Petco last night so I just grabbed the correct food, the ammonia elimnator recommended on here, and the heater. He probably is bored. There is only one tall plant in the middle of the tank and that is it. Be does like the new heater though. He does loops around it.

Do you have any colored glass candle holders? (Like colorful glass not painted) if so that would make a nice cave. If not a coffee mug that hasn't seen soap will do.

I need to finish planting my tanks haha, I think with the addition of the betta tubes and plants my boys will stop...hopefully

And yeah most decor at pet stores for fish is pretty shoddy. I've given up on them and just bought some of the above mentioned betta tubes from ricepattyfish5. They are artist craft mesh so they're safer anyway and I can plant moss on them. winwin :D

If I had better lighting I would totally plant moss on them. I want a more natural look to the tank so that would be cool but my lighting is crap! If you do that please post pics! I would love to see it.

Sayla I do not have any unfortunately. My husbands mother has stuff from her aquarium that that she said I could have so we will see. She said she has driftwood but I feel like it won't fit in the tank of won't have a hidey spot.

My 5 gallon is heavily planted after Owen was swimming the same way. Owen has a lot of energy and is pretty aggressive. He has a ceramic cave. It is handmade and I got it from my local aquarium store so it isn't one of those mass produced toys that seem to have so many issues. It's painted but well-made. He also has a TON of plants to hide in. Low level plants at the bottom. Mid level plants and one plant that stretches to the top of the water. I often find him hiding and he will poke his head out and be all stealthy if he knows he is being watched.
Moral of the story: lots of live plants.

It looks like 'feed me' wiggling to me. If he stops when you walk away or when he can't see you, that's what it is. I've had bettas glass surf out of boredom before and it looks a little different. They just slide back and forth across the glass repetitively whether you're there or not.

Yeah, he's just happy to see you.

On the subject of plants: If you just want to use plants in order to decorate your tank (and not in order to replace cycling), that's no problem. There are a few bare-basic plants like java ferns, java moss, anubias, and marimo moss balls--these require very little care whatsoever, but are generally slow-growing and can't be relied upon to keep your tank clean.

Java ferns:

Java moss:

You can also get it on a mat:

Marimo moss balls:

(note: these look like they're actually real moss balls, don't squeeze them out or run them under the faucet like people sometimes say to do with the ones you get from PetCo.)

Those links are each a different species of plant. That site gets good reviews from Bettafish.com members--like, the lady who runs it tends to send extras, ship well, etc., and ALL of those links are to the same site. So you can pick and choose whichever of those you want, and pack it into one order.

One more thing! If you buy from this site, make a thread first in the Planted Tanks section and ask for someone's code--they may be able to get you 10% off your order. I think RussellTheShihTzu uses that site frequently, you might ask them.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I got the tank looking like I want finally. I was able to wheel and deal at Aquarium Adventure and a sweet piece of driftwood with moss already growing on it and it was seasoned which is nice so I don't have to boil etc. Zen is loving it. He just keeps finding all sorts of places to swim through and hide and he isn't surfing as much at the moment. We will see. Until then here's a pic of the tank!
