When i turn off my room lights and turn on my fish tank lights my betta flares...i think it sees it reflection or something. If i leave the fish tank light on overnight is there a possibility my fish will die? (It will be flaring a lot overnight) or will it get use to it?
He most likely sees his reflection. He won't die from it unless he seriously slams his body into things, but I've never had that happen. He'll eventually get used to it.
I would guess it all depends on the betta. Mine sees his reflection, or my other two fish a lot, and sometimes he acts on it, sometimes he doesnt. Most of the time he swims in circles, stops, flares his fins out, and continues his circle. No more than 10 minutes at a time though. He's perfectly healthy! *knock on wood*
I have heard that a betta flaring all of the time could get stressed however he should get used to his reflection and stop flaring after a while. Think about when you go to a pet store and see the bettas there, most of them (assuming you go somewhere where they have healthy bettas) wont flare at their neighbors in neighboring cups, however if you move them around then they will start flaring at their "new" neighbors.
I agree adding more plants or decorations would give him something else to focus on. I also keep a couple of spares around and every couple of months will put the spares in my tank and keep the older ones as spares. I also will rotate decorations between my 3 tanks (cleaning them before moving them to a different tank). This gives my bettas something new to focus on for a little while.
