Heater Placement & filter question

I'm setting up a 5 gallon tank. Should the heater go near the filter or away from the filter? Or does it not matter?

Also, how do I know if I should baffle my filter?

OFL is right, well she is IMO. I have my heater close by my filter as well, so the heat spreads through farther and better.

And if your betta is struggling to swim right, and just seems to have to fight the current of the filter, it's best to add the baffle.

I always use an AquaClear sponge or Imagine filter foam. Others have used grocery store sponges, but, if you do, make sure it is safe for aquarium use.

Personally, I'm too chicken to use anything not made for aquariums. :)

Ditto :)
