Sorority Question!

Hey all!
My boyfriend has a 10 gallon tank with a heater and filter and currently one betta living in it. He originally wanted some generic tank-mates, neon tetras etc., but now he's wondering how a sorority would work with his existing male.
Any tips?
He's also worried that the current is too swift for the betta, and he keeps turning off the filter, interrupting the nitrogen cycle. :\ So now the tank is all cloudy. Do bettas get over the swift current? We gave the little fishy some great hiding places and lots of plants to break up the current, but my boyfriend is still worried that the current is keeping the betta from breathing/eating properly.

Feedback? Advice?

it depends on the type of filter. If it has an air hose, you can kink the hose to lessen the flow. If it dosent, you can cover the intake and outlet with sponges.
