My spring break is next week and I'll be home from March 5th-15th. 10 days. I can't stay in my dorm, and I can't really take my tanks home for just a week... Will they be ok for this long? I could take Chance home because he's in a 2.5g, but I definitely couldn't take my 10g home. My stepdad wouldn't allow it. My tank is cycled, but now it's got two more fish than the cycle is used too and I'm nervous about leaving it. Advice please?
10 days is quite awhile to go without water changes and food.
But as stated on another thread I would look into vacation feeders, but i'd get other opinions also because I dont know much about them.
But if others think its okay I would, do a water change before you leave then throw one of those in there. Or you can invest in an automatic feeder that feeds at set times but im pretty sure those are exspensive, but I could be wrong.
If they are going to go without food then there will be no waste to create ammonia build up. Mine went over 2 weeks without water changes but they were fed very little during that time.
I think they'll be fine without food or water changes. Change the water right before you leave (and feed them then too). And then when you return do a water change and feed them right away. It's like DQ said, if they are not getting fed.... they won't be pooping.. which won't create ammonia. They'll be fine. Betta fish can go up to 4 weeks without food.
Vacation feeders just make a huge mess for you when you return. Definitely not worth it. You run the risk of your betta getting too much food using one of those.
Thanks everyone! I'm just a control freak and i'll be worrying about them the whole time I'm away... But as long as they won't die of starvation or the water being dirty, I suppose that's good.
I was wondering about this too, so I'm glad to see a thread on it. My break is even shorter than 10 days so my fish might be okay, but I'll most likely give in and bring him home.
The weather has been unusually cold lately and we're required to unplug everything when we leave the dorms, and that includes fish tank heaters (also I think they turn the heat off in all the buildings while everyone's gone). So just to be on the safe side, I suppose Geist will be coming back with me. Unless I can find a way to keep his tank warm.
Besides, he'll get bored all by himself for a week! ^^
That would be a tough one,
But I guess what I'd do,
Buy two small 1 or 2 gallon tanks and take both betta's with me,
For one week they'd be better with me in the small tanks where I can care for them then left behind and worrying to death about them and afraid of what I might come back too.
I would not enjoy my time away otherwise.
They may very well survive the time away but it isn't doing the fishs health any good.
10 days is counting the say I go home (friday the 5th) to the day I come back (Monday the 15th) I come back in the mornings since I don't have class until 11. My roommate is the only one with access to my room, and she's going to France so she won't be any help lol. I might just take them home with me, I have a lot of 1g tanks... I just hate seeing them in the 1g when they're used to the 10g. And I hate stressing them out via travel...
They'll be fine. I left my guys for 2 weeks w/o food or water changes over christmas.. they looked pretty poorly but they perked right up after a few days of good care and homemade food. 10days they'll be fine. I would slowly lower the temps on the tank (to the low 70s like 72-74*) that way they won't be metabolizing so much and the length of time won't affect them as bad.
I'm going on spring break in two weeks and I'm leaving my guys for almost 10 days (unless I decide to come back early).. they'll be fine. Levi and Jumangi will be arriving at my house next week so they're the only ones that get to stay with me over spring break.
Ok good good. I think I'm going to leave them because I don't want to stress them out by traveling and toting them all over the place and changing different water and stuff. Chance will come with me, unless I can put him in a breeder trap in the 10g, because he's in a different, uncycled tank.
