I wish I had a photo of the cutest little guys this morning. I turned on the lights to find Dragon not in his usual cave sleeping but in the open next to his little tank mate Turbo which is a Nerite snail. Adorable! I never thought that he would be nice to the snail let alone be it's little buddy.
Thank you Sheridan. It doesn't seem that it was a fluke. Last night I went to bed really early even before the tank lights went off. The snail had made its way to Dragons sleeping cave but I have no idea if Dragon ever went in there. This morning I found the snail resting in the sand in the middle of the tank and Dragon laying in the sand right next to it. He is a silly Betta I think I have caught him sleeping near the surface only one time since I got him.
Without a doubt they will be quirky Sheridan! We got my grandmother a Betta several years ago she named him Rebel, he didn't have any plants and lived in a bare bottom fish bowl for four years, he was such a happy little guy. She talked to him all the time if she said his name he would wake up and start begging. She swore he loved watching basketball, she wasn't a fan but would watch it for her fish. He would always move to the edge of his bowl when it was on so perhaps he did like it. It was adorable.
I had no idea fish had such personalities until I inherited and then bonded with my little pastel-coloured Daphne. She is definitely quirky! Always does her little happy dance when she comes to the surface to say hi and beg for food. She started off pure white, then her body went blush-pink, then her tail and fins turned pale blue, then she developed symmetrical rows of black dots all over her body, and finally, her blue fins and tail became pearlescent, like a mother-of-pearl shell. Is this usual? She is remarkably beautiful.
Wow! Her colouring sounds gorgeous, and such a cute name
I would say she was very young when you got her, and her colour may have been her maturing? However I've never owned a girl, so I couldn't say for sure.
You're not the only one whose fish likes their snail. ricepattyfish's Iggy is very possessive of his snail Snowflake. I did this drawing for rpf recently:
Yes, I think her colour development was a maturing process. Meanwhile, I have found the females more affectionate and responsive than the males, maybe because they're less preoccupied with mating and its associated rituals (flaring, building bubble nests etc). I also wonder about the relative life spans of males and females - anecdotally, it seems males live 10 times as long as females. Is this true? I have had to rescue two females from the tank with the male, as otherwise, the continual sexual activity would have killed them I fear. One morning when I came out, after she had spent about 36 hours in the tank with the male fighter, little Daphne was lying exhausted in the water plants on top of the water, barely moving and gasping occasionally. She has been very happy since I rescued her and gave her a tank of her own. Any thoughts or experiences on this?
