If you are breeding for black.. find the more charcoal colored females. Avoid other colors, especially the irids [blue/gree/steel] and don't get marble mixed in.
The black finned blue bodied fish currently called melano is actually a bi-colored fish. And sould not be termed melano. A true melano is a pitch black fish.
I don't mean to hijack this thread, but since the subject was mentioned. . .
What is the difference between a pitch black melono and a super black? The melanos I've seen most often have blue sheen on them with rather dull black. The pitch black ones are often labelled super black.
I think all those fall under copper, I am not sure.
